    Prior to becoming the Founding Executive Director of the coalition in 2018, I devoted over two years to helping build what would become the formal nonprofit organization. As a volunteer, my work included various leadership roles and responsibilities necessary to bring community leaders together in support of the mission, vision, and values set forth in our strategic planning processes.

    Prior to becoming the Founding Executive Director of the coalition in 2018, I devoted over two years to helping build what would become the formal nonprofit organization. As a volunteer, my work included various leadership roles and responsibilities necessary to bring community leaders together in support of the mission, vision, and values set forth in our strategic planning processes.

    The first two years were focussed predominantly on supporting those directly affected by the tragedy as well as bringing together the organizations that were providing services to folks affected. Our initial objectives were communication and collaboration, removing barriers, filling gaps, and creating spaces for LGBTQ+ voices to be heard in order to create impact.

    As our community began to heal from the trauma of the tragedy, we recognized that there was an opportunity to collectively focus on the systemic issues facing the community and that, together, we were much more effective. What started as 18 organizations rose to 30 in those two years and the impact on inclusion, equity, safety, and community-building was substantial.

    My professional skills as a Producer allowed me to help identify gaps, communicate effectively to change makers, and bring diverse folks together towards shared missions. As Chair of the Board of Directors, I was able to set the pace and tone of formation and growth of the organization alongside some remarkable leaders and community members.

    While I had no plans to become the Executive Director of the organization, the need presented itself and I was passionate about the cause. I was also the person most intimately involved in the formation and the day to day management so it was a rather natural transition from full-time volunteer to ED. Helping my community heal after such an unthinkable tragedy was one of the biggest honors of my life and forever changed me for the better.

It turned out that person was right under their noses. Jennifer Foster, co-founder of the nonprofit formed days after the 2016 Pulse shooting, was the volunteer chairman of the board for the coalition of 30 LGBTQ and support groups until she was made permanent director in October. Her assignment: taking on homelessness, health care and inequality issues affecting the LGBTQ population, while helping break down barriers with government, business and other civic groups. Her selection was not surprising, since Foster is seen as a natural leader who co-founded the Human Rights Campaign community in Orlando and served on the board of the OneOrlando Fund, which disbursed $31 million to Pulse victims and their families. And when the high-profile Revolution’s Rise of the Rest venture capital bus tour came to town in April, Foster was a featured speaker on diversity. “She’s made it to that level,” says Mayor Buddy Dyer. “She’s the voice to the business community for the gay community.”
